Should You Have A "First Look" Photography Session On Your Wedding Day?

Updated: Dec 20, 2020

A "First Look" is when the couple sees each other for the first time in their wedding attire just before the wedding ceremony. Usually it is an intimate moment just between the couple with their photographer there to capture the reaction. I have also had a bride do a first look with her father, instead of her husband to be, which was so sweet. I would say about a quarter of my couples do a first look. I like my couples to decide on their own if they want one or not. Below are some pros and cons to help you decide as well as some photos of some first looks.

PROS:

It's nice to spend a quiet moment together to connect before the ceremony and reception begin.

If you are both really nervous, it's a great way to ease the stress.

It can be very emotional, and a beautiful moment to capture with photography.

If you see each other prior to the ceremony, you can get other photos out of the way.

CONS:

It can put more stress on the timeline of the day.

You may want the magical moment to be when you are walking down the aisle.

You may want to keep things more traditional.

There may not be a good location away from guests to do a first look.

You may feel too awkward with the camera on you to get an emotional candid moment.

Whatever your decision is as a couple, it should be what you want. It's your day!
